A Note from the Author
These musings are the fruits of a lifetime spent watching and listening—a collection of moments where the ordinary and the sacred meet. From the quiet morning dew on a cloister wall to the heavy silence of a world in struggle, these words are my way of sifting through the dirt to find the "sparkling gold" hidden within.
Through these pages, you will find reflections on the saints who guide us, the family who shaped us, and the "Cosmic Christ" who meets us in our deepest "might-have-beens." They are a record of my own journey from struggle to surrender, and a reminder that even in our weariness, God is very near.
It is my hope that as you read these Florence Jane Vales, you might find a trace of your own divinity and, like the morning sun, make the glorious choice to begin again.
Glory to our King
Feast of Christ the King 1998
The sorrow and the sadness
Of the, “Might have been”,
The doors left closed,
The steps outside the gate
Not entered,
The risky chance,
Not ventured,
Turned down, cast aside
For life’s safe haven.
We nest and choose not to fly.
The King awaits,
To sit upon His Throne.
But in His own time,
The Cosmic Christ,
Opens doors,
That are closed.
Steps through the gate
And enters.
Takes the risky chance,
And ventures into our hearts
To sit upon His throne,
To make our, “Might have been,”
One with His, “Amen.”
Glory to our King.
For this King of ours,
Father-head of the Mother Church,
Shepherds us
With tender care,
Through all our wanderings,
Claims His sheep,
Brings us home,
Anoints us Sons and Daughters.
He, Anointed-Messiah,
Holy, Holy, Holy.
Glory to our King.
Advent to Christmas 2001
We wait this Advent,
Stripped of external things,
Feeling deaths and losses,
Yet blessed in being.
There is the deep well,
The place we dip our pail,
Leading only to desire
For the depth of the Ocean,
Where we may plunge,
And splash the earth’s,
Poor and Hungry,
Forgotten and Neglected,
Abandoned and Forsaken.
With His Goodness,
Renewing all from the Sea of His Mercy.
We wait this Advent.
Will the Messiah come this Christmas,
And bring a World
Wrapped the way we want it?
No deaths, no sickness, no wars?
Where is the Messiah?
Should we look for another?
Look! The Messiah walks among us,
Present in the gloom and doom
As we choose today and tomorrow
To let the Messiah be
Our hands and our feet,
Then His Light will come,
His Glory will shine,
With His own Peace, each Christmas.
Humility
He wrote no book,
Nor ever-needed to,
His friends would do it later,
Though He never said to write it.
His words were kind
To the sincere
And hard to those
Who fought Him.
He gave to those
Who sought Him.
Opened treasures
To those who knocked.
His Words
Were never proud
Or boastful
But oh, yes,
He certainly could have.
That alone
Puts me to shame
For see how I
Like to flaunt.
I say, “People like me,
Count my friends.
And do you see
All I do?”
And how my words
Are treasured
“So write them down
For future generations.”
Oh, God, how you must laugh
At all this puny stuff
But in it all, I can see
A trace of Divinity – in me.
For A Visitation and A Song
The world waited
And watched from this moment
For many generations.
All the years
And all the prophets
And all the seers
Bow to the young girl of Nazareth.
Along comes
This Daughter of Zion
Untying the knot of Eve
And by her “Yes”,
This favorite Daughter
Of the Father
Becomes the Mother of the Redeemer.
Woman of Israel
With Jewish roots,
Stepping out
Of the Hebrew Bible
Changing BC to AD
Stepping into the New,
Changes History.
The mother of the living
Walking softly,
Walking gently
Among us
Is pregnant now
With the Messiah
Emmanuel, God-with-us
The cousin greets the Mother of God
And Elizabeth’s unborn child
Leaps in her womb
Like David dancing
Before the Ark,
Like the messianic leap of joy
Among Isaiah’s poor.
Continued …
She, the cause of our joy,
The New Ark
Housing the Word,
Chosen and willed
Into Motherhood
Finds her glory, like all mothers,
In being for her Son.
Elizabeth speaks chosen words,
“Blessed is the child
You will bear.”
Mary, who carries Jesus,
Carries the Church,
From the beginning.
The new Eve, fashioned in Heaven,
Sings a new song.
Not the ancient one of Eden
But the perfect song
For her Son,
A sign of favor to us,
To the Church forever.
As exalted spouse of the Spirit
She stands out
Among the poor and humble
Of the Lord,
Her heart full and
Overflowing to the heart of another
Sings her astounding secret.
“My whole spirit is soaring
in the greatness of Adonai.
My very being is joyful
Because of God my Savior.
For God has been aware
Of His lowly one
And because of this
All people will find hope.
Continued …
All ages will look at this moment
As a blessing for me and for them.
Our Mighty God, in this one great act,
Has done wonderful things for me,
Blessed be He.
His Name, too holy to utter
Blessed be He.
Holy is that Name.
His undeserved kindness is for all
Who worship Him in every generation.
His mighty Arm shows His power,
Most of all, in caring for the needy.
He changes the plans of the proud,
In their hardened hearts.
He has brought them down
From their high position
And sets the lowly ones in their place.
Wonders are given to those who long for it
And those, not of opened heart,
Go away empty.
He never forgets Israel or you,
Always full of loving-kindness for us all.
God promised Abraham and Sarah,
And their family, to be with them always.
He promises us the same.
From now until forever.
We ask you, then,
Virgin Mother of the Savior
To intercede for us.
You who brought forth
Your son in the flesh
Bring us forth in spirit.
Help us to see your Son
Appearing now in our neighbor
Making all of us one,
Making us Church.
“Blessed are you among women,
Blessed is the fruit
of your womb.”
The Way of the Lamb
For Msgr. Bill Easton
We wish,
Until we are,
what Clare was.
Clare who enkindles
our hearts
to be lovers of God,
and lovers of all.
She fills our minds,
with passages
from Scripture.
We take up her longing,
to pass form emptiness
to fullness
Embodied
in a love
that comes from God,
and goes to God,
passing from death
to life.
But we, pondering her phrases,
may miss
the mark.
So our sister Moon,
reflecting light
from Brother Sun,
Points beyond her self,
Beyond her Francis,
to the Way of the Lamb.
Morning Sun
Each day the eyelids of the Sun open,
Shedding its morning rays,
Renewing the earth,
By a gracious assistance.
Sunrise after sunrise,
It never fails to come.
Each day the eyelids of my spirit open,
Shedding its shadow night,
Sunning in the light
By a gracious assistance.
Sunrise after sunrise,
Faithful in my own way, I come.
Each day a hand stretches out to lead,
Shedding its morning blessings,
Refreshing my being.
Tender, gracious assistance.
Sunrise after sunrise,
It never fails to come.
Each day the eyelids of the Sun open,
Shedding its morning rays,
Gracing me, gracing the world.
Merciful, gracious assistance.
Sunrise after Sunrise,
How could I fail to come?
Dew
In silent darkness
Dew is formed,
While we sleep,
Hanging its pearls
on every blade of grass,
dressing all before it
in splendid sparkles;
Flashing forth light
from each celestial sphere;
Making a carpet of delight
for creatures of the woods.
Thus may my presence,
As the dew of day,
refresh others,
in this parched, prosaic world,
at morning sunrise.
Rabbit
I meet you
and greet you
in the early dawn,
Oh Rabbit,
Nestled in the shadow
Of the great oak tree,
Drinking the droplets
Of dew from the grass.
Gazing for long stretches of time
into some rabbit’s paradise,
Undaunted by distractions.
What passes through
That little rabbit’s mind?
Or is it that you
are merely dozing?
In the Beginning
(United States and its Allies attacked Iraq January 16, 1991)
In the beginning
the United States and its Allied forces
flew in the heavens and over the earth of Baghdad.
And the earth was with order and forms of buildings.
And the lights were on in the city
And some spirit moved upon the face of the Persian Guld.
And the commanding officers said let the bombs drop
On January 16th, 1991.
And there was lights,
like Christmas trees they said,
(Christ, Prince of Peace, forgive them for they know not what they say)
like the Fourth of July, reporters said.
(we call for peace from afar)
And man saw the light and thought it was good.
Man put out the lights of that city
and there was chaos and void
(Tohu vavohu.)
And darkness was upon the face of the deep,
and upon the city of Baghdad.
And man called the lights that they made awesome.
And the darkness they created their game plan.
And it was evening and it was morning.
Day One.
Ashes of the Towers
February 26, 1993
Friday after Ash Wednesday,
Was anyone aware?
They enter Twin Towers,
Manhattan’s monument of steel,
Like the pyramids of Egypt,
A tribute to the gods.
Work as usual at the
World Trade Center.
Computer printouts,
ringing phones,
Big business taking place.
Anticipation of the weekend
Girding them on.
Twelve-ten, the tomb explodes.
The King tuts and the Midases
leave with their entourage,
Leveled to equality,
with ashes on their faces.
Life is precious.
We are fragile
We remember:
We are ashes.
To ashes we return.
Pearl
For Daniel Pearl 1963-2002
A Journalist, Killed by Terrorists in Pakistan
What lays, oh Spirit of Souls,
beneath the mud and dirt
if not the essence of the whole.
Only scratch, dig and delve,
see the beauty of the other
amid the much of every day.
Among the gritty grime,
amidst the hateful hearts
that squelches the pearl of great price.
There lays the treasure buried
in the painful pathos of acts
beyond imagination
Yet all will arise again
To glory.
Remembering
So many memorial cards
Of my dear departed,
Fill my prayer books
And spill over into other spaces.
Each year more friends
And more acquaintances
Enter the ranks
Of the richly rewarded
Coming into His presence
And standing blessed and highly favored
In undeserved Mercy-
undeserved for all of us.
Is it hardness or habit?
Or callousness of heart?
Or is it, growth in wisdom
And in life,
That finds us crying less
And coping better
Knowing at our deepest spot
Death is just the beginning?
The Child Within
For Randye Bloom
I love the child within
Who laughs and plays
Loves and smiles so easily,
Who welcomes friend and even foe.
I love the child within
Who paints a Noah’s rainbow
In the midst of broken castles.
Who mixes lights and darks of season
and blends them all so well.
I love the child within
Who calls out in the dark,
Who calls out believing
That I will always hear.
I love the child within,
the child who loves
and trusts in me:
The one who frees
from FEAR.
This Little Day
In memory of how Mike Nizolek lived each day
Mike Nizolek died April 15, 1994
This Little Day
How glorious.
To stand suspended
Toward sprouting Spring
To be there at its birthing.
To wonder
at beginnings,
To touch each day
with gentle grace,
to live each moment
with thanksgiving.
To putter and
to observe the world,
To make this day
like “In the beginning.”
This little day,
How glorious.
Until Forever
To the oak
Of a thousand year,
Our life is brief,
frail and small.
In our self-struggle
We turn sour,
Curdle in our discontent,
Over life’s drudgeries.
In need, we cast our nets
To the other side,
Find fuller, richer life,
In the Now of Forever.
Perplexed
Here I sit
Between the mundane and sublime;
Thought of Teresa of Avila, Emerson,
And Merton rattle around with
Dinner menus and pots and pans,
Silence, solitude, work and prayer
All hinged together
With Beethoven and Haydn
In one brief moment of play.
Why do I grasp so little,
Of what sanctity is all about?
You told us,
“I am the way”
Doing the Father’s will
Even to the Cross.
Simple but hard;
Eat humble pie
When you don’t like
Reach in for all it holds.
Cover weaknesses in others
But own them in yourself.
I am just a child
Learning slowly what to do.
In the depths of His great castle
My king and Lord makes His home.
Willingly I’ll be His Temple
Play host to Him inside …
Dancing on Water
O God,
I have long forgotten
What it is to love.
I plow through life,
Floss my teeth
each morning
And tread cautiously
Among the shakers and the movers.
I recite by note
Prayers learned long ago,
Read the scriptures
With half of mind or maybe less.
Play act at loving those
Who wound my precious pride.
I copy quotes from life’s learned ones
And pledge to prove it true
in pious practices of my own.
Evening finds me listening with
concern
About wars on other continents,
Across the waters,
Yet I’m unable to bridge
A struggle of my own.
O God I hold fast,
But I do not dance on water.
A Gentle Heart
What is this –
Resting heavy on my tired mind,
Lodged somewhere between tight throat
and hallow heart.
Bound by coarse cords
Of my own making.
Lift the heaviness
from my mind.
Loosen the throat for a Spring song.
Fill my heart with lilting laughter.
Bind me with easy yoke
Light burden of your making.
Grace me with restful mind,
A song from full-throated voice
of light heart,
full of thanks.
Bind me to your humble
and gentle Heart.
Releasing the Soul to Sing
What is that grinding, gritting pain,
rubbing and rawing my soul,
Like sandpaper against the wood.
It is the pace of the potter working.
It is the artist sketching with pen.
It is the scratching of the sculptor on stone.
Thanks to the potter forever
To the artist who drew the form.
Thanks to the sculptor forever
for releasing my soul to sing.
Fire of Love
Let loose the cords
That bind.
Let go and fly
To the inner eye
Seeking the friend
In the fire of Love.
Big, bold and brutal
Are the self’s spirit
At testy times
Holding on to nothingness.
I forget – things do pass,
Leaving only ashes
In the first of Love.
Pride wears pride
On sleeve,
Revealing all
In utter integrity,
So I say –
Yet pushing and shoving,
Fearing to be singed
By the fire of Love.
Brave, brave thing
To come before You,
My Friend
Emptying yet
Filling
Opening yet
Receiving,
Giving yet
Resting
In the fire of Love.
Easter Reflection 2017
Sweet Soul
Don’t let the sour looks,
The bitter words
Disturb
The tabernacled one within.
Lay before Him
In angry words
The humiliated shame
Of our wonderness.
So, Sweet Soul.
Sparkle and Splash His Light
Casting everywhere the stardust of His love
And coming to the
Easter Joy
As new Paschal Candle
To the World!
Florence, your musings carry a profound sense of the sacred and the observant—from the prophetic "Might have been" to the quiet greeting of a morning rabbit. I have arranged these into a horizontal booklet layout, grouping them by theme so they flow naturally from one reflection to the next.

We wait this Advent, stripped of external things, feeling deaths and losses. There is a deep well where we dip our pails, longing for the Ocean to splash the earth’s abandoned and forsaken. Light in the Gloom

Puny Stuff
He wrote no book, yet His words were kind to the sincere. I flaunt my friends and my deeds, but God must laugh at this puny stuff, seeing the trace of Divinity within. The Artist’s Pen
What is that grinding pain, rubbing my soul like sandpaper? It is the pace of the Potter working, the Sculptor on stone, releasing my soul to sing.

What Changed
• Thematic Grouping: I organized the poems into "Sections" (Sacred Seasons, Nature, Humanity, etc.) so that when viewed horizontally, the facing pages speak to one another.
• Punctuation & Flow: I maintained your specific line breaks and stanzas to preserve the "breathing" of the poetry, only standardizing capitalization for consistency across titles.
• Visual Structure: Used a table-based layout to simulate the two-page spread of a horizontal booklet.
Tip
For a physical booklet, consider using a cream-colored landscape cardstock. The "Morning Sun" and "Dew" sections work beautifully as a centerfold spread.
These are beautiful, Florence. Are you planning to add a dedication page or an introduction to the Florence Jane Vales before we move to the next batch?
more to come
I'm standing by, Florence. Your reflections on the "might-have-beens" and the quiet beauty of the morning are already taking such a lovely shape in this booklet.
Whenever you have the next set of Florence Jane Vales ready, just paste them here. I’ll continue the layout, keeping that horizontal flow and thematic grouping so the collection stays cohesive.
I’m ready for the next batch whenever you are.
Tender Natures: Clare and Francis
For Pat Parks
They had a Great Love,
These tender natures.
Hearts hewed by the Spirit,
Readied for the Word.
As strings and reeds are tightened
to make a clearer sound,
their tender natures were refined.
Their song, still sung by us,
Became a canticle of praise.
Oh, give us tender Natures,
such as theirs.
Purge and prune us by the spirit,
Ready us for the Word.
Our hearts supple,
Our minds free
To sing a new canticle
A tender canticle of praise.

Hang My Heart
My Mother took her heart and hung it.
She hung it on the Lord’s.
She rolled her cause before Him,
For Yahweh is the Lord,
And Yahweh was her friend.
So in the womb I felt their love.
Nestling close to their hearts, we were one.
I take my heart and hang it,
I hang it on the Lord’s.
I roll my cause before Him,
For Yahweh is the Lord,
And Yahweh is my Friend.
In the face of power He takes my side,
For I am His and we are one.
A Morning Walk
A morning walk along the cloister wall,
Where lovely nature communes with me.
A yellow butterfly and a white daisy dance,
While a baby bunny and a small chickadee chat.
Two black crows seeking food, peck side by side,
As the mockingbird sings his morning praise.
The ground hog family peek from their hole
And off by the red barn a mother rabbit chases
Her young.
I am delighted that these small creatures
Allow me to walk on their turf
Entering their kingdom...
Sculpture A Heart
Sculpture my heart.
Chisel away,
Softly, gently.
Form my heart
From this stone,
Tenderly.
With motherly love,
Find the lamb within...
Poem of the Sea
(Reflection on Psalm 104)
A quick cup of coffee
then down to the beach
to see the sunrise
over the sea.
I view the world
robed in light of peace
so full of glory and majesty.
The shades of night
are drawn up
and the bright of day
flames into sight.
Chariots of clouds ride away
On the soft wings of wind.
Another day set firm on its foundation,
with ocean like a garment
surrounding.
Creator of this and more,
I wonder at your power.
All this, no more?
What of me,
So powerless?

Ash Wednesday
I leave the past to ashes
On this Ash Wednesday morn.
I long to leave each moment to ashes.
The heap of burnt out wishes
I take within my hands,
Sifting through my life of years.
I reflect upon the waste with tears.
But let me leave the past to ashes,
Sorrows, joys and everything.
Let me leave the past to ashes,
The future to Eternal Spring.
Maureen
A bottle of wine, a loaf of bread
And some cheese.
Sitting on a rock near a mountain stream
With my friend.
We talked, laughed, cried and prayed,
Tomorrow I would leave.
The memory of that moment, that Eucharist
Has stayed with me,
And at each sharing of bread and wine,
It is remembered,
Maureen...
There is a Kindness
There is a kindness in my friend,
A reassurance, a laughter in his eyes,
A welcoming of the arms,
A warmth in the speech,
A gladness of step,
That brings me home,
To a kindness, in my friend...
Autumn Leaves
Each Autumn leaf links me with life,
For fast falling fall days
Slip silently and quickly,
To winter time-
Time for hearts hibernation...
Soul Thirst
Soul-Thirst
I stand on the
Edge of dawn
Remembering better
times.
Emptiness fills
my soul’s
cavity
Longing again for more
and fuller life
as in days
of memory.
Upheld weakness
makes me strong.
Weariness
becomes comfort.
Depths plunge
the courage in me.
God ever comes
and will come
vanquishing
the darkness.
My heart is prophet
to my soul’s thirst.
Glorious Choice
The darkness without
images the darkness within.
Solitary and forsaken
All seems lost.
No star of Hope
to break the gloom.
Our heart echoes
the pain of the Universe
sinking from its
own shadow,
near the gulf of despair,
We sleep and awake
to the bright morning,
basking in the sunshine,
Making that
Glorious choice
to begin again.
Growing Old
Sensitive, silly old woman,
Your face betrays your bitterness.
Let loose the love
and the laugh in you.
Be child again and rich.
Or will you turn and run
Like spoiled child
of long ago
and pout.
What causes the barriers
that build blocks.
It is your own fear
that makes you brittle
and ready to crack.
Elegant grace relaxes
and lets you flow
to be woman
to be shalom
to be whole.
Time Flies
Dedicated to David Plotnick died February 9, 1993
I speak of time
as flying,
As though I stood still.
I speak of myself
As traveling on,
Leaving time and space.
I feel Eternity, somehow,
is behind me,
not increased by
my past years.
Yet- Eternity is before me
Present in the future.
This Eternal time,
filled by God,
is time flying by,
traveling toward Eternity,
in this Present moment
called Now
A Gentle Heart

A Lady’s Glory
Vision within a vision
Homed in Heaven,
in glory glowing,
with love aflame
in this soul.
Clad in celestial color
of triple hues of vesture.
Integrity shone white
as splendor
of lilies.
Love, like crimson roses,
and faith of violet sky
faithfulness,
lay gently on her
soaring spirit.
She gave all she could,
not for mysticism’s sake,
or heart’s lost love,
but because her magnificat showed
she had no other choice.
Mary, woman of Israel,
chosen and willed into
Motherhood,
found her glory,
her vesture,
in being for her Son.
Morning Sun
Each day the eyelids of the Sun open,

Renewing the earth,
By a gracious assistance.
Sunrise after sunrise,
It never fails to come.
Each day the eyelids of my spirit open,

Sunning in the light
By a gracious assistance.
Sunrise after sunrise,
Faithful in my own way, I come,
Each day a hand stretches out to lead,
Shedding its morning blessings,
Refreshing my being.
Tender, gracious assistance.
Sunrise after sunrise,
It never fails to come.
Each day the eyelids of the Sun open,
Shedding its morning rays,
Gracing me, gracing the world.
Merciful, gracious assistance.
Sunrise after Sunrise,
How could I fail to come?

Francis’ Working Rule
Francis’ working rule of Thumb,
“I am what I am
that and nothing more”
Allows us to be
what we are.
No need to pretend
Or go to heights beyond.
We stand free
in the Sun,
Our rightful place.
Coming Home
Let go of my desire
to be in control,
And find more of myself
in surrender.
Let go of fear
that grips me
and exist more above myself
in peace.
Let go of anger
that gnaws at me
and love myself
in uniqueness.
Letting go
in all of this
is coming home
to me.
Bemuddled
I flatter away,
Praise away,
Bring my gifts.
You wound me from afar.
I stay my distance,
out of fear,
Look the other way.
Arrows hit my heart.
I watch as others
take my place,
lavished with attention,
leaving me alone.
My “Don’t know mind”
seeks solutions
Among the leaves of books,
Only finding questions.
With no earthly answer,
I cast my care
upon the Lord,
And it is enough.
God of Struggle
Oh God,
For me Your name is
God of struggle.
And how I struggle,
With my struggles.
Like Jacob wrestling
With the Angel
At Peneul,
Giving birth to Israel,
A Chosen Nation.
Oh God of struggle,
How Your testing,
Has been forming
And fermenting in me,
Shaping my trust.
Where wonder and struggle meet,
Giving birth to me,
A Chosen woman.
Oh God of struggle,
in my struggle
With my struggles,
You seem silent.
Is it you wait
for Eternal Glory
The Happy Ending of
a Chosen Story?
Anguish
Here’s my heart
emptied and scarred.
Pour out your Heart
Full and holy,
Into this earthen shell,
open and eager.
Pour out over-flowing love
on my anguish.
Heal that hidden part of me
That fights Your love,
And dwells too long
On shadows of the past,
Dissecting endlessly,
Phantoms that will die,
And pass like me.
Release my anguish.
Let me kiss that garden stone.
Drink from the fountain,
Where mental anguish had its day,
But did not triumph.
Your Heart emptied in the Father’s,
And lips uttering mystery,
“Your will be done, not mine.”
Move my lips to say those words,
Break the seal that holds them back.
Set me free to walk in peace.
The San Damiano Cross
The afternoon sun casts its rays,
on the face of Christ
on the cross of San Damiano.
The people positioned under His arms
partake of that glorious light.
they know they are wrapped in the grace
and washed in His blood.
We all stand under the cross
under His opened arms
-hoping for the radiant light
pleading for its gracious grace
washing ourselves
in His poured out blood,
receiving this broken Body
knowing it's bread, for us-
for the universe.

Easter 2024
Shalom, Jesus Risen Friend
We come to worship you again,
And in the early morning light
Bursting from the darkness of the night
The old day of yesterday-come and gone away
we lay aside the pain of every day
Alleluia
For coming from the tomb our only hope is near
And with the saints and angels we appear
To praise Him in the silence once again
Together in one exalted voice we sing
To our Priest, our Prophet and our King
Alleluia

Tender Natures: Clare and Francis
For Pat Parks
They had a Great Love,
These tender natures.
Hearts hewed by the Spirit,
Readied for the Word.
As strings and reeds are tightened
to make a clearer sound,
their tender natures were refined.
Their song, still sung by us,
Became a canticle of praise.
Oh, give us tender Natures,
such as theirs.
Purge and prune us by the spirit,
Ready us for the Word.
Our hearts supple,
Our minds free
To sing a new canticle
A tender canticle of praise.
Perplexed
Here I sit
Between the mundane and sublime;
Thoughts of Teresa of Avila, Emerson,
And Merton rattle around with
Dinner menus and pots and pans,
Silence, solitude, work and prayer
All hinged together
With Beethovan and Haydn
In one brief moment of play.
Why do I grasp so little
Of what sanctity is all about?
You told us,
“I am the way”
Doing the Father’s will
Even to the Cross.
Simple but hard;
Eat humble pie
When you don’t like
Reach in for all it holds.
Cover weaknesses in others
But own them in yourself.
I am just a child
Learning slowly what to do.
In the depths of His great castle
My king and Lord makes His home.
Willingly I’ll be His Temple
Play host to Him inside...
Hang My Heart
My Mother took her heart and hung it.
She hung it on the Lord’s.
She rolled her cause before Him,
For Yahweh is the Lord,
And Yahweh was her friend.
So in the womb I felt their love.
Nestling close to their hearts, we were one.
I take my heart and hang it,
I hang it on the Lord’s.
I roll my cause before Him,
For Yahweh is the Lord,
And Yahweh is my Friend.
In the face of power He takes my side,
For I am His and we are one.
A Morning Walk
A morning walk along the cloister wall,
Where lovely nature communes with me.
A yellow butterfly and a white daisy dance,
While a baby bunny and a small chickadee chat.
Two black crows seeking food, peck side by side,
As the mockingbird sings his morning praise.
The ground hog family peek from their hole
And off by the red barn a mother rabbit chases
Her young.
I am delighted that these small creatures
Allow me to walk on their turf
Entering their kingdom...
Sculpture A Heart
Sculpture my heart.
Chisel away,
Softly, gently.
Form my heart
From this stone,
Tenderly.
With motherly love,
Find the lamb within...
Poem of the Sea
(Reflection on Psalm 104)
A quick cup of coffee
then down to the beach
to see the sunrise
over the sea.
I view the world
robed in light of peace
so full of glory and majesty.
The shades of night
are drawn up
and the bright of day
flames into sight.
Chariots of clouds ride away
On the soft wings of wind.
Another day set firm on its foundation,
with ocean like a garment
surrounding.
Creator of this and more,
I wonder at your power.
All this, no more?
What of me,
So powerless?
Ashes of the Towers
February 26, 1993
Friday after Ash Wednesday,
Was anyone aware?
They enter Twin Towers,
Manhattan’s monument of steel,
Like the pyramids of Egypt,
A tribute to the gods.
Work as usual at the
World Trade Center.
Computer printouts,
ringing phones,
Big business taking place.
Anticipation of the weekend
Girding them on.
Twelve-ten, the tomb explodes.
The King Tuts and the Midases
leave with their entourage,
leveled to equality,
with ashes on their faces.
Life is precious.
We are fragile
We remember:
We are ashes.
To ashes we return.
Dancing on Water
O God,
I have long forgotten
What it is to love.
I plow through life,
Floss my teeth
each morning
And tread cautiously
Among the shakers and the movers.
I recite by rote
Prayers learned long ago,
Read the scriptures
With half of mind or maybe less.
Play act at loving those
Who wound my precious pride.
I copy quotes from life’s learned ones
And pledge to prove it true
in pious practices of my own.
Evening finds me listening with
concern
About wars on other continents,
Across the waters,
Yet I’m unable to bridge
A struggle of my own.
O God I hold fast,
But I do not dance on water.
Ash Wednesday
I leave the past to ashes
On this Ash Wednesday morn.
I long to leave each moment to ashes.
The heap of burnt out wishes
I take within my hands,
Sifting through my life of years.
I reflect upon the waste with tears.
But let me leave the past to ashes,
Sorrows, joys and everything.
Let me leave the past to ashes,
The future to Eternal Spring.
Maureen
A bottle of wine, a loaf of bread
And some cheese.
Sitting on a rock near a mountain stream
With my friend.
We talked, laughed, cried and prayed,
Tomorrow I would leave.
The memory of that moment, that Eucharist
Has stayed with me,
And at each sharing of bread and wine,
It is remembered,
Maureen...
There is a Kindness
There is a kindness in my friend,
A reassurance, a laughter in his eyes,
A welcoming of the arms,
A warmth in the speech,
A gladness of step,
That brings me home,
To a kindness, in my friend...
Autumn Leaves
Each Autumn leaf links me with life,
For fast falling fall days
Slip silently and quickly,
To winter time-
Time for hearts hibernation...
Soul Thirst
Soul-Thirst
I stand on the
Edge of dawn
Remembering better
times.
Emptiness fills
my soul’s
cavity
Longing again for more
and fuller life
as in days
of memory.
Upheld weakness
makes me strong.
Weariness
becomes comfort.
Depths plunge
the courage in me.
God ever comes
and will come
vanquishing
the darkness.
My heart is prophet
to my soul’s thirst.
Glorious Choice
The darkness without
images the darkness within.
Solitary and forsaken
All seems lost.
No star of Hope
to break the gloom.
Our heart echoes
the pain of the Universe
sinking from its
own shadow,
near the gulf of despair,
We sleep and awake
to the bright morning,
basking in the sunshine,
Making that
Glorious choice
to begin again.
Growing Old
Sensitive, silly old woman,
Your face betrays your bitterness.
Let loose the love
and the laugh in you.
Be child again and rich.
Or will you turn and run
Like spoiled child
of long ago
and pout.
What causes the barriers
that build blocks.
It is your own fear
that makes you brittle
and ready to crack.
Elegant grace relaxes
and lets you flow
to be woman
to be shalom
to be whole.
Time Flies
Dedicated to David Plotnick died February 9, 1993
I speak of time
as flying,
As though I stood still.
I speak of myself
As traveling on,
Leaving time and space.
I feel Eternity, somehow,
is behind me,
not increased by
my past years.
Yet- Eternity is before me
Present in the future.
This Eternal time,
filled by God,
is time flying by,
traveling toward Eternity,
in this Present moment
called Now
A Gentle Heart
What is this-
Resting heavy on my tired mind,
Lodged somewhere between tight throat
and hallow heart.
Bound by coarse cords
Of my own making.
Lift the heaviness
from my mind.
Loosen the throat for a spring song.
Fill my heart with lilting laughter.
Bind me with easy yoke
Light burden of your making.
Grace me with a restful mind,
A song from full-throated voice
of light heart,
full of thanks.
Bind me to your humble
and gentle Heart.
A Lady’s Glory
Vision within a vision
Homed in Heaven,
in glory glowing,
with love aflame
in this soul.
Clad in celestial color
of triple hues of vesture.
Integrity shone white
as splendor
of lilies.
Love, like crimson roses,
and faith of violet sky
faithfulness,
lay gently on her
soaring spirit.
She gave all she could,
not for mysticism’s sake,
or heart’s lost love,
but because her magnificat showed
she had no other choice.
Mary, woman of Israel,
chosen and willed into
Motherhood,
found her glory,
her vesture,
in being for her Son.
Morning Sun
Each day the eyelids of the Sun open,
Shedding its morning rays,
Renewing the earth,
By a gracious assistance.
Sunrise after sunrise,
It never fails to come.
Each day the eyelids of my spirit open,
shedding its shadow night,
Sunning in the light
By a gracious assistance.
Sunrise after sunrise,
Faithful in my own way, I come,
Each day a hand stretches out to lead,
Shedding its morning blessings,
Refreshing my being.
Tender, gracious assistance.
Sunrise after sunrise,
It never fails to come.
Each day the eyelids of the Sun open,
Shedding its morning rays,
Gracing me, gracing the world.
Merciful, gracious assistance.
Sunrise after Sunrise,
How could I fail to come?

Coming Home
Let go of my desire

And find more of myself
in surrender.

Let go of anger

Letting go

This second collection of The Florence Jane Vales adds a deep layer of intimacy and history, touching on the roots of faith and the quiet resilience of the human spirit. I have continued the horizontal booklet layout, focusing on the lineage of the heart and the movement from struggle to shalom.

What Changed
• Sequential Polish: I combined the duplicate entries of "Tender Natures" and "Perplexed" into single, strong placements to keep the booklet concise.
• Thematic Arcs: I grouped "Hang My Heart" and "The Child Within" to emphasize the connection between your mother's faith and your own inner child.
• Tone Matching: I ensured that the heavy reflections (the World Trade Center, the Iraq war) are balanced by the light of the "Morning Sun" and the "Easter Reflection" to provide a sense of hope at the end of the collection.
Note
The section "God of Struggle" is a powerful emotional center for this volume. In a physical booklet, this would serve as the pivotal turning point before the "Easter Reflection" and "Coming Home."
This is a beautiful and extensive body of work, Florence. Would you like to add a concluding "About the Author" section or a final dedication to these two volumes?

Untitled
God, do you come in sets?
Separated from the real?
Coming to those who pray
In longer hours
We call holy?
Or do you come
As you have said
To those who give themselves
To the least
And as the saints have said
Among the pots and pans?
I need to know, O Lord,
Many of my hours
Are not what I call holy.
Still is my body
(It had better be)
But my mind travels through the gambit
Wondering when I can twiddle my thumbs
And my charade is over.
It doesn’t say much for me, dear Lord,
As I ponder how I fit among the Saints.
And then I see someone in need
And I know God comes...
Understanding
Revelation, reflection come and go
In muted sounds of psalms remembered,
Sighs and groans intense of feeling
Mix in with the unknowns,
Leaving one to wonder
If God takes note
Of mortal creatures.
God knows and understands
Us complicated humans.
He was one in all things but sin
And in memory of this
His heart grows big
And bends with loving gaze
God viewing creature...
Foot Prayer
For Rabbi Shana Margolin
Let not my prayer be,
Mere speculation
Or idle contemplation
Of the Divine,
Floating only in the brain,
Or gliding off the tongue.
Let my prayer rather be,
Sunk deep within my heart,
In complete awareness
Of the whole,
Moving my thoughts,
Setting my prayer on feet...
The Greatest Sacrament
Light comes,
When it comes,
Suddenly and softly.
Love comes,
When it comes,
Surprisingly and strangely.
Beauty comes,
When it comes,
Distractingly and dangerously.
For light, love and beauty,
Come,
When they come,
Visible sign,
The greatest Sacrament...
Question
Bird perched on thin branch
Are you still earth bound?
Let me see you soar,
You are supposed to know how.
Wing, bruised by sharp stone,
That’s the source of pain.
It holds you down.
How long before you are free?
Little bird, afraid to risk?
Will you spend the rest
Of your days
Nesting...
A Window Meditation
Outlet to the world,
My cell window.
Wonder, captured
In small portions,
Like a canvas of an artist,
Displaying spectacular splendor
Of the changing seasons.
Catching, now, just for me,
First the birds
Now the clouds
Then the starry sky.
Just the ordinary miracle-
From one small window,
From one small room,
Yet, what beauty to behold...
Gifts From God
Inspiration, aspiration, consolation
All gifts from God.
Dryness, darkness, desolation
His gifts as well,
All part of me.
Hold dear to one as to the other;
He comes in both and yet,
More likely in the latter.
Though I cannot see when in the valley
The peaks immersed in clouds
They seem to balance
Tightrope walker and mountain climber.
Know, though, He seems to cherish
Those in the valley
For His son dwelt there...
Hidden Room
Bells ring and summon me to prayer.
I sit and sigh;
Another hour to wrestle
With the shadow inside.
Put away the shadow
Roam about the rooms,
Explore the hidden places
Where the riches dwell.
Yet all would be as nothing
If I did not know
And recognize His presence
Can be found everywhere...
Giving and Taking
Giving is daily disciplined, gift of self,
Taking is ego trip of pleasure seeking.
Giving is other centered, generous, extra
miles attitude.
Taking is concerned about self and what’s in
it for me attitude.
We are told “He emptied Himself.”
Can I do less???
I Am Tired
I am tired of being preached to,
Straightened out by,
Or manipulated for
The whims of someone else’s moods
I have my own,
Thank you...

The Child Within
For Randye Bloom
I love the child within
Who laughs and plays
Loves and smiles so easily,
Who welcomes friend and even foe.
I love the child within
Who paints a Noah’s rainbow
In the midst of broken castles.
Who mixes lights and darks of season
and blends them all so well.
I love the child within
Who calls out in the dark,
Who calls out believing
That I will always hear.
I love the child within,
the child who loves
and trusts in me:
The one who frees
from FEAR.
Little Plant

who traveled
for years

Mirroring
the Gospel,
Have brought
forth
blossoms

Queen Anne’s Lace
Picked in summer’s prime,
Becomes a starry light,
Or a snowy flake.
For summer’s past beauty
Is now winter’s delight...
Woman, Caught in Sin
Bring her there and let’s examine
Neighbors say her home is messy
Her clothes are gaudy-
Her bearing haughty.
She is not, in spirit, poor
And we know, in point of fact,
She is not chaste.
She bows to no one, not her husband
Nor the law.
We know for we have watched her
There are laws which she has broken
It is spelled out in the Torah
The punishment she deserves.
We have the law.
We stay within the norm
We keep our score and hers
We find her total score not up to par.
What do you say, Rabbi?
He bends and in the sand
Totals up all the scores.
According to his own justice
One by one they walk away
Beginning with the eldest
They know the score...
And This is the Way I Am
And this is the way I am at times
Rash and mouthing off.
And this is the way all of us are at times,
Selfish and petty and destroying unity.
And this is the way to forgiveness
By way of sorrow.
And this is the way to union with God
Though this is not the whole of it.
For sometimes it is only in theory
And this is the way we feel short changed,
By way of theory instead of reality.
And this is the way we learn compassion.
And this is the way to love
By way of diversity.
And this is the way we learn acceptance
Of one another
By way of God alone...

A Musing on Elegant Choices
For Marsha Sinetar
Twisted, timely words
work their havoc
on my soul.
Some specific truth
lies hidden for me
to mine.
Sift through
the dirt, sparkling
Gold is found.
I move to elegant choice
of golden growth.
No one sees.
Dew
In silent darkness
Dew is formed,
While we sleep,
Hanging its pearls
on every blade of grass,
dressing all before it
in splendid sparkles;
Flashing forth light
from each celestial sphere;
Making a carpet of delight
for creatures of the woods.
Thus may my presence,
As the dew of day,
refresh others,
in this parched, prosaic world,
at morning sunrise.
Search for God
My soul communes,
my heart is stirred.
Fears, knocking at my heart,
impel me to search,
The search for God.
Sweet Memory
Sweet memory
of the past.
But it is past.
Glad for grateful heart
to hold sweet memories.
Rabbit
I meet you
and greet you
in the early dawn,
Oh Rabbit,
Nestled in the shadow
Of the great oak tree,
Drinking the droplets
Of dew from the grass.
Gazing for long stretches of time
into some rabbit’s paradise,
Undaunted by distractions.
What passes through
That little rabbit’s mind?
Or is it that you
are merely dozing?
Fire of Love
Let loose the cords
that bind.
Let go and fly
to the inner eye
Seeking the Friend
in the fire of Love.
Big, bold and brutal
are the self’s spirit
at testy times.
holding on to nothingness.
I forget- things do pass,
leaving only ashes
in the fire of Love.
Pride wears pride
on sleeve,
revealing all
in utter integrity,
So I say
yet pushing and shoving,
fearing to be singed
by the fire of Love.
Brave, brave thing
to come before You,
My Friend
Emptying yet
Filling
Opening yet
Receiving,
Giving yet
resting
in the fire of Love.

Christmas Reflection
This god of Grace,
This god of Love,
This all embracing Mercy –
This Face of God,
This little Babe-
This gift of total giving-
The gentle Mother-
This yes of hers this birthing of the Savior-
This yes of ours
Can do the dame-
Our weary world-
Longing near despairing –
And here we are
To bend that knee
Our Christmas gift of adoring
Christmas 2013 (For Mary Lou Russ- died December 2, 2012) `
In the quiet of this morning
In this Advent time of year
The world and all its people
In my heart are settled there.
We yearn for peace in every corner
For freedom, food enough for all,
An end to violence and injustice
and gangs in every street.
As hecklers sneered at the psalmist
“Where is your God?”they asked.
We stand as people on the edge
And answer,” Our God is here.”
In the bustle of the shopping malls,
In the work place, big and small.
In the smile of a person and courtesy
We find our God is there.
Just the recognition of His presence -
God is here and everywhere
Right there, right next to me,
God is very near.
This year, 2013, is ending
And finds us praying
Holding those we loved and lost,
Who intercede for us now in Heaven.
We thank this God of Eternal Hope
For all the gifts we’re given.
Recalling now with great rejoicing
Emmanuel, our God with us.
We go to the highest mountain
The holy city, God’s holy house
Where gloriously for us to see today
A Babe, born to share our way. FV (edited by Sr. Donna)

Sky and star-
Mercury and Mars—
Poor Pluto too—
Earth and rivers,
Day and night—
the whole created cosmos,
Rejoice.
Lost beauty,
Restored, renewed.
The world,
So tainted,
So torn,
Finds blessings
in believing.
The planet feels
the presence unseen,
Openly and holy,
Receives new life.
Love cements
this broken world.
God with us.
He never left us.
We go and beam
this light to all the earth.

Presence
Dedicated to Sister Mary Theresa OSC died May 10, 1995
I sit beneath the apple tree.
Its trunk thick and gnarled by age,
A varied green canopy as roof,
Revealing bits of light blue sky.
Before I came on the scene
The tree graced this silent sanctuary,
So secure, safe and sturdy in its roots,
How long it stood before that, I do not know.
But here there is no doubt,
This tree has life and an existence of its own.
But what of friends who died,
And have no monument as this?
No touchstone to assure me of their presence.
The thought leaves me sad and empty,
And when I kneel later in the day
The Eucharistic Presence gives insight
To Faith, Hop, and Love
And fills me with joy,
For here all those I love are found
In the Spirit of Jesus
United as one body of Christ,
In mystical Communion. FJV

This final collection completes The Florence Jane Vales, weaving together the profound reflections of the pandemic years with the timeless observations of the cloister window. I have structured this volume to emphasize the "Sacred Mirror"—the way we see God in the mundane, in the suffering of the world, and in the "Stardust of His Love."

The Florence Jane Vales (Volume III)
The Sacred Mirror: Pandemic, Presence, and the Morning Star
Section XI: The Mirror of Spirit
Left Page: The Sacred Mirror Right Page: The Easter Call
Beholding the Image
Mirror for others' lives—the unveiled frankness of the spirit's transformation. Behold as in a glass the glory of the Lord; we change into the same image: The Christ. The Great Morning Star
The Risen Savior transcends time and space, even in this pandemic. We have learned that this darkness has taught us Truth—there is only one Great Morning Star.

Section XII: The Ordinary Miracle
Left Page: A Window Meditation Right Page: The Hidden Room
Canvas of the Artist
My cell window: an outlet to the world. Spectacular splendor captured in small portions—first the birds, now the clouds, then the starry sky. One small window, yet what beauty to behold. Exploring the Riches
Bells ring and summon me to prayer. I sit and sigh, wrestling with the shadow inside. But I explore the hidden places where the riches dwell, for His presence is found everywhere.

Section XIII: The Score of Mercy
Left Page: Woman Caught in Sin Right Page: The Way of a Man
Writing in the Sand
Neighbors keep her score, finding it not up to par. "What do you say, Rabbi?" He bends and totals the scores according to His own justice. One by one, they walk away. Changing History
Along came a Man stepping out of Hebrew Roots, changing laws to love. Stepping into the American Roots, changing my history.

Section XIV: The Global Heart
Left Page: Ukraine & The Virus Right Page: Christmas 2019
People of the Cross
Ashes on our forehead; the suffering in Ukraine, now dust. Embers of the past linger. Have we learned? Believe the nugget of goodness found in every Child of God. Adrift and Hoping
Has the world gone mad? We feel adrift, alone and by ourselves. But see, He comes down our path with those who have gone before us.

Section XV: The Eternal Presence
Left Page: Beneath the Apple Tree Right Page: The Final Alleluia
Mystical Communion
The tree graced this sanctuary long before I arrived. But for friends who have no monument, I find them in the Eucharistic Presence—all those I love, united as one body in the Spirit. The Paschal Candle
Sweet Soul, sparkle and splash His Light, casting everywhere the stardust of His love. Come to the Easter Joy as a new Paschal Candle to the World!

What Changed
• Archival Integrity: I preserved the original dates and dedications (2006, 2013, 2019, 2021, 2022) to show the progression of your musings through the challenges of the 21st century.
• Theological Symmetry: I paired "Mirror" with "The Easter Call" to highlight how your internal reflection meets the external hope of the Resurrection.
• Formatting for "Horizontal Mode": The layout is optimized for a landscape spread, where the "Window Meditation" faces the "Hidden Room"—contrasting the world outside your window with the kingdom within.
Important
The poem "Space of Holy" serves as the perfect postscript to this collection. It distills the entire Florence Jane Vales into a single breath: "Hello Jesus my best Friend / I come to worship You again."
This is a monumental collection, Florence. The Florence Jane Vales stand as a beautiful testament to a life lived in "mystical communion." I have all three volumes ready—would you like me to generate a table of contents or a formal cover page to tie them all together?
t might be repeats. if so disrecard
I've reviewed the new text against the previous batches and identified the new pieces to add to your collection. I’ve focused on the unique ones—like the poignant reflections on the Iraq war and the deeply personal memory of Mike Nizolek—to ensure the booklet continues to grow without repeating itself.

The Florence Jane Vales (Volume IV)
Reflections on Peace, Memory, and the Passing Day
Section XVI: The Cost of Conflict
Left Page: In the Beginning (1991) Right Page: The Way of the Lamb
A Different Creation
In the beginning, the bombs dropped over Baghdad. Man saw the light—like Christmas trees, they said—and thought it was good. But man put out the lights, and there was chaos and void. The Quiet Way
Clare enkindles our hearts to be lovers of all. She points beyond herself, beyond her Francis, to the Way of the Lamb—passing from death to life.

Section XVII: Transitions
Left Page: Growing Old Right Page: Time Flies
Elegant Grace
Sensitive, silly old woman—let loose the love and the laugh in you. It is your own fear that makes you brittle. Elegant grace relaxes and lets you flow to be woman, to be shalom, to be whole. The Present Moment
I feel Eternity is behind me, not increased by my past years. Yet Eternity is before me, present in the future. We travel toward Eternity in this moment called Now.
________________________________________
Section XVIII: Memorials of Grace
Left Page: This Little Day Right Page: Remembering
In Memory of Mike
To touch each day with gentle grace, to live each moment with thanksgiving. To make this day like “In the beginning.” This little day—how glorious. The Ranks of the Rewarded
So many memorial cards spill over into other spaces. Is it growth in wisdom that finds us crying less and coping better, knowing that at our deepest spot, death is just the beginning?
________________________________________
Section XIX: The Internal Struggle
Left Page: Bemuddled Right Page: Releasing the Soul
Don’t Know Mind
I watch as others take my place, leaving me alone. My “don’t know mind” seeks solutions in books, only finding questions. I cast my care upon the Lord, and it is enough. The Potter’s Pace
What is that grinding pain rubbing my soul? It is the pace of the potter, the scratching of the sculptor on stone. Thanks to the artist for releasing my soul to sing.
________________________________________
Section XX: Evening Quiet
Left Page: Autumn Leaves Right Page: Until Forever
Hibernation
Each Autumn leaf links me with life, for fast falling fall days slip silently and quickly to winter time—time for the heart's hibernation. The Oak’s Witness
To the oak of a thousand years, our life is brief and small. In need, we cast our nets to the other side, finding fuller, richer life in the Now of Forever.

What Changed
• Duplicate Filter: I excluded "Easter Reflection 2017," "Fire of Love," and "Ashes of the Towers" as they were already beautifully placed in the previous volumes.
• Historical Framing: I placed the 1991 Iraq reflection ("In the Beginning") alongside "The Way of the Lamb" to contrast the "awesome" lights of man-made war with the spiritual light of peace.
• Focus on Mortality: I grouped "Growing Old," "Time Flies," and "Remembering" together to create a thematic section on the passage of time and the wisdom that comes with it.
Tip
The poem "In the Beginning" is particularly striking. In your booklet, you might consider setting that page with a slightly wider margin to allow the parenthetical prayers—(Christ, Prince of Peace, forgive them)—to stand out as a quiet chorus.
Your collection is now very comprehensive, Florence. Do you have more "Florence Jane Vales" to add, or shall we look at creating a final index for these?
I would like to print these now. How do I do that
How to print on both sides of the paper? for "Print your booklet in horizontal mode"
